Upright Vacuum Cleaners An Essential Home Appliance

This item was filled under [ Featured Articles ]

A vacuum cleaner is an essential piece of equipment. It would be very difficult to cope without one. People prefer domestic vacuum cleaners for carpeted floors in their homes.

The vacuum cleaner is an ingenious device. It has an air pump that creates a partial vacuum to suck up dust and dirt. It collects the dirt by a filtering system or a cyclone for later disposal.

Upright vacuum cleaners are the best selling type of vacuum we offer. While you can vacuum most surfaces with an upright vacuum cleaner, they are highly effective on rugs and very convenient in large rooms since the vacuum is in front of you and you have more direct control than you would with another type of vacuum. The vacuum bags are usually larger on upright vacuums so you use a less amount of bags than with other types of machines. Some manufacturers have added hoses and other tools to give upright vacuum cleaners more functionality. This means choosing an upright with onboard hoses and wands make it possible to vacuum harder to reach place.

An upright vacuum has the pump mounted directly above the suction intake with the bag mounted on the handle that rises to about waist height. The upright vacuum designs usually employ mechanical beaters often rotating brushes to help unsettle dust to be vacuumed up. A belt attached to the vacuum motor drives these beaters.

People who purchase an upright vacuum cleaner are also often interested in the attachments that the vacuum cleaner offers. Most have a longer wand that can be used between couch cushions and in small areas that are difficult to reach. They also have a brush attachment to better pick up hair and lint, and they often contain other attachments that can be used on curtains and furniture. For very delicate fabrics, though, the upright vacuum cleaner is not recommended, because it can damage them with its powerful suction. Overall, however, the upright vacuum cleaner is a very good choice for most homeowners. For those people who are worried about the weight of an upright vacuum cleaner, self-propelled models and lighter weight models are also readily available, and the warranties are usually very good.

Heat Pump Buying Tips

This item was filled under [ Featured Articles ]

A heat pump is basically a reverse air conditioner. Instead of having cold coils on the inside and heat coils on the outside, this process is reversed. A heat pump has a switch to change from air conditioner mode to heater mode. When in heater mode, it moves hot air into the home, heating it. If the switch is turned to air conditioner mode, the reverse effect occurs, cooling the home. A blower pulls air from inside and circulates it against the coils, then blows it into the home.

A heat pump is energy efficient and can save you money in fuel costs. However, there are certain considerations that should be thought of before determining if this type of device is right for your home. What type of fuel is customary in your area? If you use natural gas, you may want to stay with traditional heating and cooling systems that use that. Heat pumps work on electricity and this type of energy is more expensive than natural gas.

If you are using electricity, though, a heat pump can save on energy costs from your traditional air conditioning and heating units. The installation of a heat pump is more expensive than a traditional unit; however, the heat pump can heat or cool a home up to 2.5 times the amount of an air conditioning unit using the same amount of power. This makes a heat pump a great option for people where electricity is predominantly used.

In what type of climate do you live? If you live in a place where the weather gets extremely cold for long periods of time, a heat pump may not be as energy efficient as it would be if you lived in a moderate climate. If the weather continually gets below about 30 F, the heat pump has to work harder to warm already cold air. A supplemental heating process that runs on electricity may be needed to provide sufficient warmth. This process may make the costs prohibitive.

Heat pumps come in a variety of sizes. The size chosen depends on the size of your home. Most homes need a capacity of two to five tons to adequately heat and cool the home. Make comparisons and check energy efficiency on models before making a decision as to whether a heat pump is right for your home.

Heating pumps can be a valuable addition to your home. Consider the type of climate and the source of fuel used in your area. Make a determination on whether this investment is right for your home by comparing existing energy costs with the savings a heat pump will offer. Keep in mind that installation and purchasing is an initial investment but can greatly pay off over time.

Energy Star Appliance Will Save You Money

This item was filled under [ Featured Articles ]

Energy Star appliances are supposed to save you lots of money on electrical costs, but do they? Is the energy star rating just an ingenious marketing plan?

Energy Star is a good program with great intentions but it is in need of a makeover, the standards that manufacturers must adhere to are too lax and often manufacturers can qualify their own products as meeting the requirements to be considered energy efficient. There is no captain on the energy star ship, and the deckhands can just run amuck.

So that means… on any Energy Star product there is an Energy Star guide that estimates how many kilowatts the product is using and an estimation of how much money you will spend a month on that product. The problem is some manufacturer claim that their products use much less kilowatts then they actually do, so you can’t always trust the Energy Star guide.

So what can you do… there are tried and true products that are better on energy then others. For example, front loader washers, not only wash better than top loaders, but they do a better job of ringing moisture out of your clothes, which then allows your dryer to use less energy when drying those clothes. Refrigerators with the freezer on the top or bottom are much more energy efficient then the side-by-side models.

Before You Purchase A Home Espresso Machine

This item was filled under [ Featured Articles ]

Instead of running to your local coffee shop or favorite corner cafe for the perfect cut of espresso, consider making your own at home. If the thought of becoming a kitchen barista has you shaking without any caffeine, think again! There are a wide variety of espresso machines that are geared for home use, from the basic to the same machines used by the professionals. However, before you drop a couple hundred of dollars on that top of the line espresso machine, consider your options and needs. Also, if you are experiencing sticker shock from some of the higher end espresso machines, keep in mind that you are saving a great deal on a daily basis by avoiding high priced indulgences at coffee shops or cafes.

The first think you should know before choosing a home espresso machine is that there are several different varieties of machines. Each different type of machine will come with a different price tag and different capabilities. Although the top of the line machine may be nice, it may not necessarily meet your needs. Instead of buying an espresso machine simply because it is deemed the “best,” buy a machine that you can (and will) use on a regular basis. The different types of home espresso machines are:

Pump Espresso: Typically what you will find in a coffee shop, a pump espresso machine are usually made for commercial purposes, but can be used in your home. Be prepared to expand your budget if you are looking to purchase a pump espresso machine, since they are typically the priciest of the bunch. Also, pump espresso machines are usually the largest, heaviest, and noisiest of the options, but it produces a fantastic cup of espresso. These machines work by using a pump to keep the water pressure at an appropriate level.

Piston Espresso: If you are looking for a great, low maintenance espresso machine, consider those than run on a piston or lever system. Instead of a pump to create pressure, these machines use a level that must be maneuvered in order to create steam. Although a piston espresso machine is very quiet, they may require a great deal of arm strength to continually pull on the lever. Furthermore, the piston espresso machine is capable of making a great cup of espresso, but it may take practice to get the hang of the process.

Steam Espresso: Using steam to create pressure to make the espresso, these steam powered espresso machines are typically the type found in the home. With smaller machines that occupy less space and cost less money, steam espresso machines are quite quick and easy to use. However, keep in mind that the steam produced may not provide the appropriate level of pressure, so the steam level should be constantly maintained.

Moka Pots: Moka Pots are a stovetop method to producing espresso. The process is simple and easy, although the final product may be less than professional. Using specially designed two-part pot, the steam produced by the water boiling in the bottom of the pot is forced into the top part of the pot, where the coffee is boiling. It requires a great deal less pressure than the other types of home espresso machines, but there is no milk frothing or foaming attachments, so you may have to sacrifice that feature for price and size.

Any one of these different types of home espresso machines will allow you to make a delicious cup of espresso. Your choice should be based upon needs, usability, overall size of the machine, and of course the price. A high end espresso machine can run up a bill in the thousands of dollars.

Best Air Purifiers

This item was filled under [ Featured Articles ]

Picking the best air purifier is a very difficult decision since the need of each allergy or asthma situation has different needs.  Adding to this tough task is different allergens and different types of home pollutions are removed in different ways.  Below are some comparisons of some of the more popular type of air purifiers.

Air Purifiers with HEPA (High Energy Particle Arresting) filters were originally developed for the atomic energy commission and are used in commercial clean rooms to remove particles of dust and other airborne pollution. This is a paper or polymer sheet with very tiny holes that allow airflow to pass though the material but not very much else. The holes are so small you need a lot of surface area for a reasonable amount of airflow to pass though the material.  It is because of this that the medium is always folded in an accordion or zigzag fashion to get a lot of surface area in a small area. There is also a mixed version of the technology that one manufacturer uses where the holes in the HEPA filter are slightly larger to promote more airflow but the air is charged with electrostatic wands.  Which then attracts any of the smaller particles that get thru the holes. HEPA Filters work well in the home for trapping particulates.  The disadvantage is that the filters must be changed regularly (every 6-months to 5-years depending on the manufacturer).  Before purchasing you would also want to review how much air by-passes the filter, fan noise, how long the filter is good for and finally price of both original unit and replacement filters.  The review of any HEPA unit depends on the efficiency (how much air by-passes the filter), fan noise, filter life and price.

UV air purifiers use ultraviolet light.  Ultraviolet light in the right intensity destroys the DNA of microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses.   The disadvantage of a UV air purifier is that removes very few gas pollutants and no air particles.  It would be necessary then to purchase a UV air purifier along with another type or one that combines with another filter system.

Ion Generator Air Purifiers are small air purifier devices that put out a stream of negatively charged Ions.  These ions charge particulate pollution and when the particle bumps up against something it sticks due to the electronic charge.  These devices are used on US submarines and in the poultry industry to keep the feather dust down.
These air purifiers do what they say but there are some very distinct disadvantages.  Particulates end up on your walls so your walls turn black near the device.  Secondly, since they typically do not have a fan they only work in a localized area.  They also do nothing for gas pollution and some may put off some dangerous Ozone.

You can see just with the 3 examples above there are differences in air purifiers.  Research and comparison shopping is necessary to find the right purifier for your specific case.  Do not allow promotional hype to sway your judgment, picking the wrong air purifier is as bad as not having one at all.
